According to the latest research, it is indeed possible to have a red hair color that can give you a ‘red head’.
Red hair dye can be used as a ‘miracle cure’ for redheads, and has been used as an alternative treatment for other conditions like cystic fibrosis, says a new study from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
“For some, redheads can be a little bit hard to see or feel, so we’ve started to find that red hair is actually a pretty easy way to bring out a little more red in the face, and to help people look a little different,” said Dr Sarah Loughran, an associate professor in the department of dermatology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
“It’s really quite amazing how quickly redheads come out of the shadows, and we’re actually seeing red hair in the general population that’s not normally seen,” she said.
Dr Loughren said it was not uncommon for people with red hair to have trouble identifying other people, but with the use of a colour that looks natural, even people with the same red hair colour can often look different.
“People can look different from one another, and people with darker hair and red hair tend to be more expressive,” she explained.
“We can see the redness in redheads with the best-looking red hair or brown hair, but people with lighter hair and darker hair tend not to be affected by the red.”
In fact, people who have lighter hair tend have a much more attractive face, so when you see people with brown hair with red, it might not necessarily be because of the red dye, but rather because they have a darker hair texture.
“A study published in the American Journal of Cosmetic Dermatological Surgery in February found that people with naturally red hair could be at a higher risk of developing a skin condition called alopecia areata.”
Some redheads have a natural red hair texture, which makes them more susceptible to melanoma.
This condition can be extremely painful for red-haired people, and the red hair can also cause sun damage,” said lead author Dr Sarah Leopold.”
For example, red people with fair hair and dark skin can experience sunburn more easily.
“The skin of a redhead tends to be the most susceptible to sunburn, and so it’s a little difficult to find a good solution for this problem,” Dr Leopolder said.
The AAD said it did not have any data on whether red hair had any effect on skin cancer, but it did recommend people with alopechia treat the condition with sun protection and bleach if they wanted to reduce their risk.
“Red hair can actually act as a skin cancer protection factor because it is more absorbent than darker hair,” Dr Loughun said.
“If you’re not careful, you could get a sunburn on your forehead, or even your chin, if you have red hair.”
Most people who suffer from alopacias have some other skin condition, like eczema or psoriasis, that can make redheads more susceptible.
“But if redheads are being treated with a red dye that is specifically designed to treat alopascia, it can reduce the risk of getting skin cancer.”
The AAJEC also found that using red hair as a temporary hair colour might not be as effective as people would think.
“Our study showed that a red tinted moisturiser with a light pink tint can help reduce redness, but red hair with a natural tone can still be used to help reduce hair colour,” Dr Lee said.
